Class in Advanced English I
Motivation is part of success in everything.
Technology gives new opportunities to learn English in a different way. Today´s topic was about Advantages in technology. I was very happy because the lesson plan had good exercises to develop with the students. At the beginning of the class there were few students in the classroom because it was raining outside.Though,it was very nice to have all of them participating actively. They sat in different places and formed pairs to play a game. I could see that some of them didn´t want to talk more than the time that was expected. They were very shy at the beginning.During the presentation, the students were talking more and practicing about technology. There were some proves about the use of technology in the classroom because they were using the cell phones getting the pronunciation and meaning of some words. They answered a quiz of 14 questions in triads. They were testing their general knowledge about technology and science.I could notice that they were more active in this part of the lesson. The sitting arrangement was wery appropiate for the classroom and the group.I think they needed more extra activities to talk aloud. The behavior of some of them were not exactly appropiate for the class.
If had to teach this lesson again,I would try to separate the students who need more attention.

Teacher Iris, I know that it is a problem when we want to make pairs, groups or other things to play some activities. Some students don`t want to move or work with another person. It happens to me, what I do is to let them work in that way because you lose time trying to set them in another way.

ResponderEliminarI can see that you had difficult times, but remember that not all days are the same, for the rest about your class i can see that you could manage everything in a very nice way. Nice, teacher!! Good job.
ResponderEliminarI suggest you not to separate the students who need more attention. Maybe you can use something that is called "Directed study" in which you ask some students (who have not problems) to help the students that need an extra help. In that way they help you to help because in your role as teacher, you cannot be only for a few students. You must be there for all of them. Maybe this can work for you. It is just an idea. I have used it and it has been useful for me. NICE JOB, TEACHER.

ResponderEliminarNice to find you here Iris :)
ResponderEliminarI know you are doing a great job in your teaching practicum. Sometimes external factors affect our classes however, those things don't have to affect our activities at all.
To make our students to engage in every activity without asking them directly is very hard and takes time, but we have to make them see that the benefit is for themselves because if they participate they learn more and practice the language.
Hi teacher Iris!!
ResponderEliminarI think that the topic you were teaching was really interesting because it is important to know about technology. Nowadays, we can see that technology has had a great advance and we as teachers have to take advantage of all the improvements it has had in order to create a better learning environment in our classrooms.
I guess that the students were really motivated because of this topic!!
As you explained, you had a problem making students speak. I think that it depends on the kind of activities you bring to the classroom. If you want them to speak, bring interesting activities according to the things they like. In that way, they will be motivated talking about their interests!!
Congrats because I know you are doing a good job!
It seemes like an interesting topic, unfortunately, we need to know our students first in order to make decisions on where they're going to be sitting, on who we should separate from whom, and so on. I think all of us have gone through the same, although there are more terrible groups than others. . . I wish you the best for your coming classes, and look at this experience as a lesson learned, and now try to make the necessary changes! :)

Hi Iris, let me tell you that I tried to add a comment for you last week but I could not because I had some problems with my account. It is very interesting when I read in your blog some of the difficulties you are facing; it is interesting because I think that all of us are in the same situation; the last idea you wrote about is extremely useful; you have to separate the groups at the beginning of the class so that they get accustomed to work with different classmates and therefore to get new ideas. I did this in the last class and that’s why I told you at the beginning that it really works.
ResponderEliminarGood job Iris…
Iris,
ResponderEliminarI agree with you a 100%. Motivation is a key factor in every new challenge we take. It is importaqnt to motivate our students with different strategies and activities in which they can espress their ideas and thoughts.
Technology gives a great opportunity for teachers to incorporate new ideas and applications to the class to keep the students' motivation. Technology can also help the students to become independent learners. It is time that teachers incorporate technology to their classes and give a chance to the students to discover new ways in which they can learn.

Teacher Iris!!! You are a nice teacher. Remember that there are some days in which students misbehave and they don't want to participate, but it is important to overcome those experiences doing the best of you. Remember to stimulate the students' learning with the appropiate use of activities, and let them work by themselves. it means that you will guide them, and they will produce their English.
