My fourth class

Tuesday,September,21st,2010

I had a different experience in the classroom., today. It seemed like if all the girls had eaten chocolate or any kind of candy because they were very excited. I think it was because they had an evaluation the next class. At the beginning of the class some of them were a little reluctant in practicing in front of the class and some others were very excited cheering them up. It reminded me the children of a normal kindergarden class. In fact, they are studying to be kindergarden teachers. They expressed me that they felt affraid about the evaluation they had, and perhaps the children had transmitted the feeling in the morning during their practicum. I really felt little angry with them ,but I could understand their mood, so I tried to be patient, but not bawd.Even though it was the part of grammar explanation,I tried to design some exercises in which they could practice in front of the class.
The topic was about the use of " a quarter to and a quarter for..." so, I decided to bring a clock for the class. I had a funny and unforgettable experience with it. When I pasted the clock on the board, a hand fell down and I had to create one improvised with paper and masking tape. At the end all students participated even when some of them were talking to much. In my opinion they should take into account that there are only 2 classes during the week. The teacher told them to be more responsible with the other activities of the subject I think it is necessary to have extra energy when they are moody.
They formed groups and made some exercises about the time expressions at the end I could feel that they had clarified some of the doubts they had about the previous class. They were practicing and behaving better at the end of the class and I consider my possition helped them to change their ways. If I had to teach this lesson again, I defenitely would be more emotionaly prepared to help those kinds of students in such as those peculiar days . After all this is the challenge of a teacher ,but also the duty of student... even when there are ups and downs the show must go.

  1. I understand it is really difficult to work with students when they feel uncomfortable in the class due to other things or problems they are facing. I liked that idea of bringing a clock! It made me remember about those times when we had to create clocks and other materials that now are being so useful for us. Those clocks really catch students' eye :)
    Good work, Iris!

  2. The same happened to me today. They had an evaluation and they didn`t want to participate in my class because they were studying. What I did is to tell them that the time to study was over and now it was time for the English class. Of course they didn`t say anything because the teacher was there. The best thing is that they worked a lot and they even forgot for some minutes that they had an exam. So don`t worry and for the next time do the same....but in front of the tutor teacher...

  3. Well, Iris. Students sometimes are kind of worried when they know they have an evaluation.

I guess you worked in a very clever way. I like the idea you shared with us in this time.

I really like your class. I think that we are never ready to deal with some situations that happen and that we don't expect. Remember that we learn from those situations always. they help us to grow up and learn for the next time or the next classes in the future.

    Nice job!!
