Teaching English in Technical English 1

I began with my classes of the second period this week. It was a nice experience to have a large group with only women as students. I felt very comfortable at the beginning of the class because the girls were very kind and active since the class started until the end of it. Even though I could see some of them talking about the difficultoes that English represents for them and that they can´t understand everything. I took that as a prevention of being ready to help them , as the professor said: " Help them to understand and use the vocabulary". The class was about the possessive adjectives and pronouns and it was very nice to see that even when some of the students don´t like English they try to participate and all of them have fun during the class. I did a short diagnostic of their English levels in order to know how they are developing the skills. I could notice that this group is divided in two.One side is the group of the girls who have passed the 10 levels in the extension program and the other side is the group of the girls who haven´t had previous experience learning English. As a result, I must take more importance to prepare activities in which they can be mixted. They worked very nice and also practice the vocabulary individually and in pairs.Besides, the methodology helped them to participate actively because it was also about colors and clothes. Though not all the students participated because some of them were free and I asked them to choose a classmate to go to the front or do a specific exercise. I will consider the application of activities in which all of them participate and if it is necessary no voluntarly. I think the sitting arrangement was good, but the classroom is very small. If I have to teach this lesson again, I will be sure to take into consideration the tips that the Professor gave me such as be ready to observe and try to make the students who don´t like english feel comfortable and encourage them to learn through practice.

I know that you will have a great challenge teaching Technical English because in this group, you have only girls!
What called my attention about your group is that it is divided into two groups: The girls that have taken levels and the ones that haven´t. I think that in this case, you have to look for strategies in order to make them work with different classmates because this problem can be worse if they continue working like that.

Congratulations because even when most of those girls do not like English, you are trying to help them use the vocabulary and you are also trying to bring activities in which all of them are working!!

  2. Wow Iris. I guess you will have many things to do with this group. Consider that every group has different things that we have to take into account, don't worry I know you can do it.

Your personal experience will help you to deal with this. I know you will learn many interesting things with these girls.

Go ahead my friend and show what you are made of. God will always help you. Keep it in mind.
I like the way you worked.

  3. Woe teacher Iris. I already know you are a good teacher. You have a big challenge wich is Teaching technical English to women. I really would like to be teaching in that group, but Mr Melendez didn't allow me, jajajajajaja. Well, you mention that your group is divided into two. You have to be careful when doing the activities because they don't have to work with the same group. They have to change groups, and you have to make them work not only with the same group they work with, but also with others. It is not easy to work with unexperienced students, but I know you can do it.

  4. It is hard to teach English to these kind of students that are only taking this class as a subject and not because they like it. Another thing that I think is kind of difficult is to teach only to girls..!!!! I`ve never done that before, but as you told some days ago I can see you`re having fun there.

  5. Nice work teacher Iris!
I know you have a nice chance to help people to improve what they know. Working with girls only has many advantages and you have to take advantage of this situation. This group needs to improve or to enrich their vocabulary, so start thinking about different strategies to help them to learn new words and useful expressions every class. Keep on working hard my dear : )
